Tanning beds can be lethal!

In Lake Wylie, a few miles from where I work, a man crawled into a tanning bed and narrowly escaped when it caught on fire.

I've always thought this whole tanning thing is kind of kinky.

Some people, I'm told, go naked (or is it nekkid?) when they lie down in these coffin-like beds and bake.

It's always been a case of white people trying to get darker.

And now--you can REALLY BURN UP, as in the tanning bed catching on fire.

But that won't deter folks from trying their best to be brown.

Consider, for example, what a customer at the Solar Beach Tanning Salon in Rock Hill said when reminded about the fire a few days ago at Lake Wylie:

"That could happen anywhere, not just in a tanning bed,” said Kim Bazemore. “I would still feel comfortable (in a tanning bed). I'm fixing to get in one now.”

Tanners--they're passionate about brownness, and nothing (not even fire) will stop them.

That quote from the tanner made me laugh out loud.

The thought of a tanning bed makes me uncomfortable. Obviously I don't use them, but whenever someone mentions a tanning bed all I can think of is suffocation and electrocution.

First of all, thanks for reading and commenting, Miciah.

You hit the nail on the head!

It's always been curious to me that white people want to get darker.

LOL!

I'll take skin cancer for $200, Alex.

Wow. People will do anything to look beautiful I suppose.

Thanks for tuning in, Aussie student. Hope you're well! Careful about too much sun.

I used to tan frequently, but now I will only before a special occasion (usually one requiring a new dress) or a beach/tropical vacation.

Believe it or not, 19 years ago the places would allow a pregnant person to tan! (I did this!) I would never imagine doing that now.

Enjoy the beds! They are relaxing!

When I roast marshmallows, I like them brown. Most of the time, I catch them on fire to get them crispy--that's how they are best. But you can hear them searing in the flames. Doesn't sound so appetizing for humans!

Couldn't have said it any better, Brian.

Appreciate that nugget of insight from you.

Hey, TTTT,

You do already have some nice color. I noticed it on your face that last day of class.

Do you have a swimming pool or a hot tub? Get all the way down to your skimmies (BD suit) and float on the water. That is how I'm working it over this terrific spring break!

Blessings!

Amanda - actually they still let pregnant people get in them! I know but supposedly there is no concrete evidence supporting that it is bad (although most people find that to be the norm). And as a former tanning bed junkie - it is bad super bad for you, but it is an easy way to start off the summer months without getting super burned the first time you get out in the sun.

Hey Alyssa,

Wow, they still allow that? I'm really surprised. Before I did it myself, I asked my OB if I could use the tanning bed and his response was "The baby doesn't get any light in there!" lol

Interestingly enough, I learned that the rays in the bed cause the let-down reflex if you are lactatating! I had to get out of the bed when I realized I had soaked it with 'mother's finest', lol.

And of course you are right that it is super bad for your skin, but a couple of sessions just to start off in the spring does make for a nice natural bronze later and wards off that painful lobster look!!

Blessings!
Amanda

Tanning Beds are not the only thing we do that can be lethal. We heat, cook and cool with electricity.Sometimes theres a Fire.
Tanning at the beach,on the golf course.Or might I include sitting in the race stand can also be bad for our health.Lets be thankful these fun things can be done in moderation. And give our sympathy and time to the real lethal situations.Like plane crashes and forrest fires.
Dont Knock it if U havent tried it.

Well, you raise some good points, Minnie Pearl. Didn't mean to paint all the tanners with a broad stroke.
